Week 2

In our second week working at this farm the work has picked up a little bit. For the first two days we worked with this dude named Morgan who ran a landscaping company. Morgan was a really nice dude but was very cutthroat. When we first arrived to the job site Morgan told us I like being on time and having my jobs done right. That day Morgan taught me a really important valuable lesson of not rushing through your work and doing it properly. At the end the first day all of the boys were tired and all we wanted to do was kick back our feet and relax. We did work like this for the first two days and it was truly exhausting. After we were done working with Morgan we went back to work in the farmer gym. Farmer Jim had us working in the fields again. Our first day back we dealt with a lot of the cattle and just making sure everything was right and they had enough hay and water. Farmer Jim was very enthusiastic about his work, But however when it came to the second week he started to tre...

Day 12.

My last day on the farm I cleaned out one of the barns on the property and reorganized the tools. I was put on this task on my own and it took a majority of the day. Farmer Jim wanted all the lawn mowers to be cleaned out, and to have new filters put in them. At first I was not educated enough to put a filter on a lawnmower, however it was not too bad. I did this for about five lawnmowers. After that I made sure the oil was good in the tractors, so they would run right in the fields. This was pretty interesting to do because when farmer Jim taught me this he said it’s kind of like checking your car oil. After that I re-organized and WD-40 all of the tools and hung them back up on the walls. This wasn’t too bad but dealing with all of this WD-40 was quite annoying. It just made my hand super greasy. After that I just made sure the floor was clean in the barn and made sure all the wood chips, grass, and dirt was all off the ground and there was a spotless floor.

Day 11

Today I worked with Kelly in the trainers office. When I first got here I put away the big 20 gallon Gatorade jugs in the shed. After that Kelly sprayed down the tubs and I had to scrub them down and get all the muck out of them. Listen take me too long, however the tubs were pretty gross. This wasn’t too hard it was more just time consuming. Those were the only tasks that Kelly assignment for the day.

Week 2 reflection

My two weeks of senior project I’ve learned very valuable lessons. I learned really cool tools on how to farm efficiently, and work together. Senior project really gave me a good perspective on time management and how to work efficiently without getting sloppy. Working with three of my best friends during senior project was a blessing in disguise. We had fun every single day working, but when we are working we never got off track and we always stayed focus and worked hard on our work. Learning how to farm at a young age I think was really important for me to learn and its always something I can do young or old. Yesterday we worked with our new boss and his name is Morgan. The first thing we did was weed all these flowerbeds around the property so we could start mulching later that day. We all went with Morgan to go get mulch and fill up a trailer worth. We used this entire trailer throughout the entire day and laid out around five beds of mulch around the property. After we were d...

Day 10

Hours worked 3 Today I did my work at Proctor. I worked for Trish in the sports department. I did a lot of labor by moving boxes and breaking down the lacrosses nets. For the first two hours I organized all the baseball, softball, tennis, and lacrosse stuff. This took me a really long time because first I had to bring everything up to the storage unit and then organize them by sport. The hardest thing would have to be bringing everything upstairs but besides that it was a piece of cake. It was just very time consuming and hot. Shortly after I was done with this I took my lunch break. After my lunch break I went onto the lacrosse field and I broke down all the lacrosses nets and neatly stored them away. This took me about an hour.

Day 9.

10 hours worked Today on the farm we had to stack and split wood for this restaurant called bricks. This restaurant is owned by the farm and is located in Grosse Pointe. We had to fill up a couple trailers with what we stacked throughout the day. This took us a good amount of time for how much this restaurant needed the world. They use the word for their pizza oven and they can roughly fit 10 logs at once. With the amount of what they go through we filled up roughly about three trailers. After that just myself had to go back to the garden and water the all the onions we planted previous days before. When you first plant onions you need roughly 12 gallons of water every 5 feet. We planted altogether 480 feet of onions.

day 8

Hours worked 10  5/18/22 Today we Stacked this big wood trailer today for the restaurant called Bricks. The person who owns this farm also owns the restaurant. This took us quite a bit of time for how big the trailer was. After that we learned about minerals and went to go find minerals in the woods. I’m still not too familiar with everything about this but it has to do with the dears and feed. This is really interesting also a lot of fun because we went riding on ATVs in the woods. Riding on ATVs really made it more more fun of a time. This was really interesting to learn about and I wish I had more time to learn a little more about it.

Day 7

Image
Hours worked 10  5/17/22 Today we worked with Morgan again. We went to another area of the property and started to mulch more. We went through two trailers of mulch today. We also did a little more weeding. Then we headed over to another area of the property and started laying down rocks and making a garden. We also added a brick pathway to make it look more pretty. This was actually a lot of fun to do and it felt really good when we were done with it for how long it took us.

Day 6

5/16/22 Hours worked 10  Yesterday we worked with a new boss and his name is Morgan. The first thing we did was weed all these flowerbeds around the property so we can start mulching later. We all went with Morgan to go get mulch and fill up a trailer worth. We used this entire trailer throughout the entire day and laid out around five beds of mulch around the property. After we were done mulching we started raking up a bunch of leaves and dry rubbish around the property.

Weekly reflection (week 1)

Throughout our first week of senior project I’ve learned very Key lessons of farming. The farm we work at is outside of Detroit Michigan, and us four do a whole lot while were there. We’ve learned the importance of having a healthy water system even if it’s natural or by pump. We dug out big trenches while we were at the farm for the first couple days and had to make sure the water was flowing in at the right pace and it wasn’t damaging the crops. We also planted a bunch of onions and potato’s in the first couple days of us being there. Doing these tasks weren't very hard, they're just very time consuming. Planting onions pretty much took us the entire day due to how small they were, and giving them enough space so they don’t overlap with each other. Somewhere around day three or 4 we had to dig these massive holes 6 feet apart from each other. The reason we had to do this was because they’re putting in a new fence system to try and prevent little rodents from coming in and e...

Day 5

Image
5/13/22 Hours worked 10 Today at the farm we did a little bit of weeding. We weeded to get ready to plant some vegetables in the incoming days. We also dug a very large trench today for the watering system for the farm. This took us a good amount of time to do throughout the day and we need to make sure we matted down the dirt after so it will not fall into the trench when water came through. We also planted a bunch of potatoes today. Planting potatoes was much different than planting onions due to that we had to dig much deeper. Planting potatoes was honestly and it was not as annoying as playing the onions.

Day 4

Image
5/12/22 Today working on the farm the first thing we did was walk up and down a very large field and pick large rocks up. The reason we had to do this was because this flower field was going to be turned into a Wheatfield, and the only way to get the tractor through efficiently was by moving his big boulders. This took us majority of the day due to how large the field was. After working on the field and finishing our job we went straight to the onions for the third day in a row. Onions are a big time job at this farm. After the onions we dug trenches to put in a new fence for a vineyard. This took a good amount of time and was very exhausting throughout the day. The overall day was very tough and put a lot of work on our bodies.

Day 3

Image
5/11/22 Hour worked 10 Today we went to the farm in the morning. The first thing we did was clear out a bunch of dry rubbish. Hank and I tore out live plants and had to replant them after. Second we had to plant the second row of onions. This took us almost 2 hours to complete, and tomorrow we have to plant the third row. We went to the land managers house and helped him with more planting, and other personal projects. We have been spending lots of time in the fields, and getting to learn way more about soil.

Day 2

Image
5/10/22 Hours worked today 10 Day 2. Today we started off by pulling more roots then moving cow manure. We needed to put this manure in the compost bins and separate the hay from it. Next we planted the 3600 onions and we have more to do tomorrow. We also dug some pits and had to remove roots for the second time. We also had to go through a lot of mulch and pick the rocks out of it so when machines go over it they would not get caught in break. I had a second task I did on my own. I went around the fenced in area and removed all the thorn bushes. I did this by cutting them with a small hand clippers. After I was done with this task I threw all the sticks and branches in the woods.

Day 1

Image
5/9/22 8 hours of work done today.  Day one. Today we got to the farm and the first thing we started doing was spreading mulch. We spreader three lines by 100 feet each. We’re getting ready to plant 3600 onions and prepare for this we needed to spread the mulch the way we did it. We also did a lot of weeding and I took us a very long time. I never realized how much farm work was and the labor behind it. I’m having a really good time doing all this labor and it’s really showing me importance of hand hand labor. After weeding we had to dig these holes and take out horseradish roots, because farmer Jim told us how the roots messed up plating other produce.
