Week 2 reflection
My two weeks of senior project I’ve learned very valuable lessons. I learned really cool tools on how to farm efficiently, and work together. Senior project really gave me a good perspective on time management and how to work efficiently without getting sloppy. Working with three of my best friends during senior project was a blessing in disguise. We had fun every single day working, but when we are working we never got off track and we always stayed focus and worked hard on our work. Learning how to farm at a young age I think was really important for me to learn and its always something I can do young or old.
Yesterday we worked with our new boss and his name is Morgan. The first thing we did was weed all these flowerbeds around the property so we could start mulching later that day. We all went with Morgan to go get mulch and fill up a trailer worth. We used this entire trailer throughout the entire day and laid out around five beds of mulch around the property. After we were done mulching we started raking up a bunch of leaves and dry rubbish around the property. All of this work took around 10 hours.
Today at the farm we did a little bit of weeding. We weeded to get ready to plant some vegetables in the incoming days. We also dug a very large trench today for the watering system for the farm. This took us a good amount of time to do throughout the day and we needed to make sure we matted down the dirt after so it would not fall into the trench when water came through. We also planted a bunch of potatoes today. Planting potatoes was much different than planting onions due to that we had to dig much deeper. Planting potatoes was honestly fun and it was not as annoying as playing the onions.
Today we went to the farm in the morning. The first thing we did was clear out a bunch of dry rubbish. Hank and I accidentally tore out live plants and had to replant them after. Second we had to plant the second row of onions. This took us almost 2 hours to complete, and tomorrow we have to plant the third row. We went to the land managers house and helped him with more planting, and other personal projects. We have been spending lots of time in the fields, and getting to learn way more about soil.
Today we started off by pulling more roots then moving cow manure. We needed to put this manure in the compost bins and separate the hay from it. Next we planted the 3600 onions and we have more to do tomorrow. We also dug some pits and had to remove roots for the second time. We also had to go through a lot of mulch and pick the rocks out of it so when machines go over it they would not get caught in break. I had a second task I did on my own. I went around the fenced in area and removed all the thorn bushes. I did this by cutting them with small hand clippers. After I was done with this task I threw all the sticks and branches in the woods.
Today we stacked wood in this trailer today for the restaurant called Bricks. The person who owns this farm also owns the restaurant. This took us quite a bit of time for how big the trailer was. After that we learned about minerals and went to go find minerals in the woods. I’m still not too familiar with everything about this but it has to do with the dears and there feed. This is really interesting also a lot of fun because we went riding on ATVs in the woods. Riding on ATVs really made it more fun of a time. This was really interesting to learn about and I wish I had more time to learn a little more about it.
All these fun tasks I accomplished I just feel like I learned so much. I really recommend to any senior they really take advantage of there senior project and make the most of it. I think lots of kids don’t take this job too seriously and they could really have a fun time and a really cool experience.
